Mosquito Hill Wines

2015 Mosquito Hill Chardonnay

$36

This Chardonnay was made from the I10 V1 clone, which is the lower yielding of the two main clones in the Magpies Song vineyard. The yield here was just over a tonne per acre (19 hl/ha). The fruit was hand picked at a Baume of around 12.8 as our aim is always towards elegance rather than power.

These days inoculated yeasts are so efficient in turning sugar into alcohol that the alcohol comes in a bit higher than expected and here it was just over 13%.(A mixture of native and inoculated yeast was used) The wine was fermented in French oak barriques (with the addition of two new hogsheads this year) and averaging about 20% new oak.

The wine is surprisingly full bodied, but lovely nonetheless (The winemaker talking!). One experienced taster  has likened it to a Kistler Californian Chardonnay and I am happy to accept that comparison!
